The thesis systematically analyzes and researches Liang Dingfen’s calligraphy for the first time. It shows the origin of his calligraphy style by making a detailed introduction to times background of his life and his family inheritance and succession. The formation of Liang Dingfen’s calligraphy style can be mainly described from three phases: In the learning phase, he follows Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi and Yan Zhenqing whose calligraphic works are fluent and characters are slightly flat. In the transitional phase, he mostly follows the trail of Huang Tingjian whose calligraphic works are bold and sophisticated. The strokes are thick but well-shaped. In the maturity phase, he mostly follows the trail of Su Dongpo whose calligraphic works are lively and with thin but hard strokes. By learning from Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Su Dongpo and Huang Tingjian,the characteristics of Liang Dingfen’s calligraphy mainly behaves as followed:the calligraphic style is both fluent, bold and lively, the characters are of classic elegance with square and flat shape, also the strokes are thin but hard.Liang Dingfen’s attitude to inscription is “like it but not learn it”, which is not an exception in calligraphic atmosphere of late Qing Dynasty that inscription is specifically popular. As concluded, it reveals the true situation that Calligraphy model has been experienced a tough period of development in late Qing Dynasty.
