The Translation Of Visible Thought: The New Psychology Of Body Language

When it comes to translation, many kinds of translations come to our mind such as fiction translation, prose translation and technical translation. Yet most of them belong to the literary translation. Though there have been heated discussions about various translations, psychological translation, as a branch of non-literary translation,has not been widely studied. However, considering Psychology of body languages have immense social significance and scientific significance in learning psychology,and better communicating with and understanding people by watching others’ body languages, the author of this thesis and translator translated some excerpts into Chinese in hope of guiding her life and work.This report is based on the translation of Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 of Visible Thought: the New Psychology of Body Language – a book written by Geoffrey Beattie.Given to the fact that it is an academic work on Psychology which is obscure and complicated, and that there exist some technical terms, the translator chose Newmark’s semantic translation and translated Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 of this book by herself.In the process of translation, the translator made full use of semantic translation to be faithful to the original text.This translation report consists of five parts. The first part is task description, including the background information and significance of the translation report. The second part is process description, including pre-translation preparations and translation process. The third part is the text analysis, in other words,to introduce the features of the text and theories about semantic translation. The fourth part is the case study. The fifth part is the conclusion, about the feelings and experience about translating academic works.
