The book Re-Envisioning Past Musical Cultures Ethnomusicology in the Study of Gregorian chant written by Peter Jeffery, the professor of the department of the Harvard University and the tenured professor at the University of Delaware was edited into the Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology. The book includes six chapters which are chapter one: The problem; chapter two: The New Historical View of Chant Transmission; third: Some Reflections on the New Historical View; forth: Some Ethnomusicology Concerns; fifth chapter: Some Possible Means of Oral Transmission, and the last chapter: Summary and Conclusion. The viewpoint of this book derives from the dilemma of methodology on chant researching, and it provides the best path to the other of the difficult is adding the new perspective on ethnomusicology. The author criticizes “on the New Historical View” holds by Leo Treitler and Helmut Hucke before giving specific angle, and he tried to solving this problem by comparative study, cultural context and oral transmission.Book review written by me explains the reason why I choose this book to translate at first. Secondly, I introduce some concepts and pioneering research mention in this book. In addition some advices to solve the problems I was faced during the translating. At last, I express any introspection on the chant researching within our country as well as the widen the theoretical horizon of the whole ethnomusicology.
