On Bureau Of International Information Program’s Translation Of 2012 State Of The Union Address From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

In recent years, the communication between China and America has become more and more frequent. As an indicator of US government policy, the State of the Union address has attached much importance to China. However, China does not pay much attention to it and the mainstream media only give a briefly report about the core ideas of the address. Many English fans from China translated these passages and posted on the internet, while due to constrains on their ability, most of their translations are lack of sufficient considerations and cannot covey the message and style of the address properly. From my perspective, expect for their English abilities, they lack in a theoretical guidance for their translation. On the contrary, the U.S government emphasizes on the translation, the Chinese version provided by the U.S Department of State’s Bureau of International Information Programs is of great value for our MTI students to contemplate and appreciate. Therefore, the thesis will take this official Chinese version translated by the U.S Department of State’s Bureau of International Information Program as a research case and analyze what methods are used for interpreting words, phrases, and sentences by functional equivalence theory and what influence and effect the translation arrives at.
