This article mainly discusses the development of noun and adjective concurrent-type from the different versions of Modern Chinese Dictionary. There are three methods in the naming standard. The first method doesn’t distinguish between them. The second method regards the primary and secondary as the naming standard. The third method regards the order of senses as the naming standard. We choose the third method. Noun and adjective concurrent-type is the one that adjective sense come after noun sense. Adjective and noun concurrent-type is the one that the noun sense come after Adjective sense. The paper is divided into five parts. The introduction briefly reviews the research status of noun and adjective concurrent-type. We found that previous studies this question mainly from the synchronic level, few studies are made on the noun and adjective concurrent-type from diachronic level. So this paper attempts to grasp the law of development of noun and adjective concurrent-type from seven versions of Modern Chinese Dictionary. The first part of the main body calculates the number of noun and adjective concurrent-type in the different versions of Modem Chinese Dictionary. Only the fifth and sixth editions marked the part of speech. First of all, we find out the entries with noun sense and adjective sense in the two versions. Then on the basis of the combination of dictionaries and corpus, We test the order of senses. On the one hand, the part of speech and the meanings of word have a certain correspondence. On the other hand, for the meanings of word, the definitions of different versions are basically identical. So we would presume the part of speech in the others versions. The second part analyzes the approaches of the conversion from nouns to adjectives through the syntax position. Nouns can turn into adjectives through attributive position, predicate position and adverbial position. Different positions have an influence on nouns that turn into different classes of adjectives. They may promote the conversion from nouns to adjectives separately or collectively. What’s more, productivity conversion of Adverb+Noun, which not only speeds up the development of noun and adjective concurrent-type to a staggering degree, but also does good to the transformation of the internal parts of speech. The third part mainly discusses the reasons of unbalanced development of Noun, Adjective Concurrent-Type. The results showed that the speed of noun and adjective concurrent-type is faster than adjective and noun concurrent-type. The reasons are as follows, cognitive mechanism of transformation of parts of speech, systematic way of transformation of parts of speech, semantic basis of transformation of parts of speech, and value of pragmatics of transformation of parts of speech. The fourth part attempts to predict new members of noun and adjective concurrent-type in future. Firstly, We choose 222 nouns as our research object from Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU and National Broadcast Media Language Resources Online. Secondly, We choose Type frequency as our research method. At last, We think that abstract nouns with adjective morpheme and property meanings can turn into adjective more quickly. |
