Abstract/Summary:
With the growing economic and political development of China and the cultural stepping-out strategy, Chinese culture is becoming more and more popular in the international community. As an essential part of traditional Chinese culture, ceramic plays a very important role in disseminating Chinese culture to other nations. The Traditional Techniques of Ceramic in Jingdezhen is a National Press Fund Project in China’s 12 th Five-Year Plan, which gives a vivid and detailed description of the traditional process and techniques of ceramic making in Jingdezhen, so the translation of this text is of great significance in terms of spreading Chinese culture. At present, most studies of ceramic translation are focused on the text or translation methods only, and fewer translators would combine translation theory with their ceramic translation practice. Therefore, it is of practical significance to use foreignization strategy to translate the text of The Traditional Techniques of Ceramic in Jingdezhen, as it can present the cultural and linguistic difference of the original text into the target language, which can not only disseminate Chinese culture better, but also improve the distinction of ceramic culture. Based on the text translation of The Traditional Techniques of Ceramic in Jingdezhen, this research will apply foreignization in translating Chinese traditional culture of ceramic under the fidelity principle and flexibility principle, and through comparisons and illustrations, it demonstrates the practical use and effect of four commonly used foreignization methods during the translation project, namely transliteration, transliteration plus explanation, literal translation and literal translation plus explanation. And the purpose of this foreignization practice is to help the readers understand and accept ceramic culture easily and appreciate traditional Chinese culture. As the report reveals, foreignization plays a constructive role in guiding the translation project, and it is of great advantage in terms of cross-cultural translation, which contributes to a better dissemination of Chinese culture. In addition, this report shows that ceramic translation not only requires the translator to be familiar with the traditional techniques of ceramic in Jingdezhen and acquire a large quantity of ceramic terms, but also requires the translator to have a certain knowledge of traditional Chinese culture. It is hoped that this report offers some referential value for further studies in this field.
