Odilon Redon is a French painter of symbolism in the19th century. His paintings are based on imagination showing the inner world of our human beings in deep impulse and magic vision. During my creation, I am influenced by the symbolism style of Redon, and I consciously learn and study his paintings. This paper attempts to show the influence and track of his painting style on my creation by analyzing the artistic characteristics of Redon. This paper first briefly introduces Redon’s life and his painting career, then analyzes the characteristics in different periods of his art starting from the concrete works. In this paper, Redon’s use of color is quite amazing. Imagination, fantasy, poetry, symbolism and misty runs in the pure bright color. The color of his paintings is rooted in his extraordinary imagination, attracting people’s sight instantly. Painting as the visual art, visual stimuli are particularly important. The previous drawing of Redon is against the pursuit of color and light of impressionist, and it is to show ghost image and hallucinations which do not exist in the real world, which is very similar to later expressionism. While the flowers painted with chalk embodies the quiet spirit which is beyond the nature, and they have extremely potential strong soul of strength. Then, in this paper, I demonstrate something that I want to draw based on my own experience, showing the similarity between Redon’s paintings and mine. I want to draw my own soul, dreams, and something deep inside your heart. Inner vision of the soul is what I have been keen to gain, and Redon gave me the biggest inspiration. Both the lithograph in his black period and the chalk painting of later flower theme opened a window into the inner world. In this section, I will start from the relationship between color and emotional expression, and discuss how I draw lessons from Redon’s use of color to express feelings. This is to transfer the feelings in life into visual images by the language of painting. Finally, this paper gives some my own works, specifically clarifying my reference of Redon’s painting. Redon’s expression and ideas, and especially his use of color all have left a trace in my own creation. I look for my own road of art by studying Redon, and that is also the path to inner spirit world.
