Chang Chi-yun is a swell in politics and academics, who not onlyinherited the eastern Zhejiang scholars’ pragmatic style, exhaled the old and inhaledthe new, and also had new achievements in historiography, geography, education,philosophy, national defense, foreign exchange and other fields. There is a specialsignificance in studying the historiography-geographical academics and practice ofChang Chi-yun. In the surge of western academics, he took the responsibility ofinstruction, teaching and research in the20thcentury, which made a big contribution onthe construction of historiography and geography. It is a quintessence, his personalityand academics, which the changes in cultural tradition and social environment alwaysreflected in the personal research. It turned out to have a high academic value thatstudy on the relationship between academic and society, academic and country, studyand official career, academic and science, with a specific background especially20thcentury.The historiography-geographical academic of Chang Chi-yun, which primarilyaffected by the family, Liu Yizheng, Zhu Kezhen and some other teachers in hisacademic careers. At a later stage of his career, he had a extensive and profoundacademic exchanges with domestic-foreign soul-mates, such as Paul Vidal de LaBlache, Jean Brunhes, and Chang Yinlin. What’s more, with other scholars, he hadsome discussion on the application of historiography-geography issues, whichinvolved the capital issues, border issues, national defense, and so on.In1923, Chang Chi-yun graduated from Nanjing Normal University, then heentered into the Zhong Hua publishing company and carried out the job of editinggeography textbook of high school. In1927, Chang Chi-yun taught the geographycourse in the Central College. In1936, he created the department ofhistoriography-geography in Zhejiang University. Besides, he had carried out someother correlative educational activities like textbook compilation and research works.In1962, he established the Chinese Culture academy, which has made a greatcontribution to prompt the development of historiography-geography, and has made the school of historiography-geography emerged and strengthened.With the educational idea of “the combination of historiography and geography”,Chang Chi-yun had cultivated a large amount of excellent talents in historiography andgeography. What’s more, he also had advocated the new spirit of historiography andgeography, which have made a profound influence on the discipline construction ofChinese historiography and geography, no matter on the issue of academic researchand education, or on the issue of curriculum implementation.
