Han Suyin (1917-2012), Chinese Born British woman writer, was devoted her life to communicating and understanding between China and the Western world, known as "China-the West bridge". As a Eurasian, Her cultural identity had great different from other Chinese American writers, who often appear in the study of cultural identity. Han Suyin wrote five autobiographies, to describe the process of how to construct her own cultural identity in detail. This essay is based on the five book series, and explores in the complex cultural environment, how Han Suyin to construct and maintain her own cultural identity. The essay is consist of four parts.The first part illustrates the concept of cultural identity. Showing that the cultural identity anxiety is a dynamic, instead of a static."The Other" plays a key role.The second part explains the reason why Han Suyin produced the cultural identity anxiety, and posing three reasons——lacking of maternal love, Education conflicts between East and West and historical social factors.The third part analyzes "the Other" which in the construction of Han Suyin’s cultural identity. First, reviews the five stages of the construction of Han Suyin’s cultural identity. And then focuses on the respective effections of "the Other" which in different constructive stages of Han Suyin’s cultural identity. Finally, explores the meaning of "the Other" in the constructive process of Han Suyin’s cultural identity.The fourth part explores Han Suyin’s cultural identity constructive strategies, discusses the internal relation between each of them, and the interrelation to "the Other".The closing sentence highlights Han Suyin’s cultural identity characteristics, and the impact on her.
