Abstract/Summary:
Conference interpreting activities play an increasingly important role as Chinastrengthens its international communication and cooperation. Serving as a bridge forinter-communication of various conferences, interpreting aims to make both partieshave smooth conversations and fruitful discussions. In fact, the success ofinternational conferences largely depends on high-quality interpretation. Exactlyspeaking, qualities of interpretation cannot be solely evaluated by subjective factors. It is necessary to take the particular characters of interpreting itself into account. Incomparison with translation, interpreting is characterized by prompt languageconversion and time-based expression when it takes place in a specific situation. Inview of these unique features, this thesis attempts to conduct the multifactorevaluation of conference interpreting quality. In order to realize it, the writer not onlyreferred to some existing research achievements on the quality of interpretation butalso integrated some relative theories about translation and interpreting. The process of multifactor evaluation can be conducted from the following threeaspects: generally speaking, fluency of delivery is regarded as a key factor that affectsfeelings of audiences to judge interpreting quality. The first experiment recorded thetime length of on-site interpreter and each participant. Through analyzing theexperimenting data, it can be concluded that the fluency of delivery is mainly revealedby normal speech rate, distinctive rhythm and precise time control of delivering. Thesecond experiment was targeted to the degree of accuracy, which is equivalent to theprinciple of faithfulness in translation. By contrasting with source information, thecompleteness of targeted translation can be evaluated. Due to distinct differencesbetween Chinese and English, interpreters ought to avoid word-for-word translation, but stress the cohesion and coherence of targeted translation. Third, the ultimatepurpose of interpreting is to achieve fruitful communication for both parties, so thepractical communication effect should be a significant standard for evaluating thequality of interpretation. In this thesis, the evaluation of practical communicationeffect was mainly conducted from cross culture perspective.
