This thesis conducts a study of the official English version of China’s White Papers with a focus on the treatment of redundancy in an attempt to discover how negative-transfer leads to redundancy in English translations and possible solutions. In this paper, a brief introduction to China’s white papers and Functionalistic Approaches are firstly presented, followed by its application in the translation of China’s White Papers. A phenomenon, namely, redundancy, in the current translation version of China’s White Papers is identified, along with its specific manifestations and cause. An introduction to negative language transfer is offered to enable a better understanding of the nature of redundancy. Functionalistic Approaches are the principal theory in the analysis of redundancy in this paper. At last, solutions to redundancy are provided. The author manages to categorize the solutions into three kinds:elimination, no change and alteration.Looking back on related studies conducted before, the author finds that papers on white papers’translations and the cause of redundancy are abundant; nevertheless, papers containing manifestations, the cause and solutions as well are rare, and not many papers on redundancy in China’s white papers exist. So it is the author’s aim to provide a comprehensive paper on targeted analysis of redundancy in white papers and offer its cause, manifestations and solutions altogether.
