| As a ubiquitous phenomenon in literary works, cultural misreading is inevitable incommunication of different cultures. And translators, as the disseminator of culture, havealways been playing an important role. Thus a study on translator’s manipulation of itssubjectivity is of great value when dealing with cultural misreadings.With a reference to previous research, a comprehensive analysis on the phenomenonof cultural misreadings is made in the book On A Chinese Screen by Maugham. Throughcomparison of the two Chinese versions of the book, this thesis aims to make a research onthe manipulation of translator’s subjectivity regarding to cultural misreadings. Acombination with the present situation of the study on translator’s subjectivity is alsoincluded. Under the guidance of related theory, this research is intended to pursue the besteffect of translator’s subjectivity for the purpose of providing references for the translationrelated to cultural misreadings.The paper is divided into six chapters. Chapter one is an introduction to thebackground of this research, its significance and method. Chapter two conducts a reviewon the domestic study of Maugham and its works, especially the book On A ChineseScreen. Chapter three categorizes these phenomena of cultural misreadings in the book bycertain criterion. Chapter four focuses on the analysis of translation strategies in dealingwith cultural misreading by comparing two Chinese versions of the book. Analysis on theeffect of the translation strategies and methods employed by Gengshou Chen and JianqingTang is made in Chapter five from both sides of positive and negative. Chapter six makes asummary on research results and limitations as well as an outlook for the futureimprovement. |
