Marcel Carne is a typical figure of the French Poetic Realism Film, but different from other figures who changed their film theme constantly, Carne found it very important to insist a creation of love films. He expressed and defined love in almost every film he directed. During the golden era (1936-1946) of his film directing, Carne’s eight master works was not only a reference of the action of love itself, but also a metaphor of the physical and mental situation of modern people in30s and40s of France, especially those who suffered from poverty and living in the bottom. This article tries to summarize the structure of love and its function in promoting the plot in Carne’s films from the perspective of Narratology. Then it analyses the narrative elements such as the character’s images and environmental characteristics, and connect all these elements that present love with the social reality of France in1930s, to point out the reasons that constructed the illusory love in Carne’s films. |
