Depression as a common mood disorder has affected one’s daily life, study and workseriously, which will lead to suicidal thoughts or even suicide in severe cases. However, regardless of race and area, this phenomenon is much more common in the art field, especially to painters, writers and musicians. We could realize that a good number ofartists had been suffering from depression or even gone for death by their diaries, lettersand biographies, such as Vincent Van Gogh, Ernest Hemingway and Virginia Woolf.More to say is that painting creators as a special group with skills to make a living isof high risk of depression, the vast majority of who are inclined to madness on bothphysical behaviors and psychological states. This phenomenon exists throughout the worldboth in the west and in Asia while its number is striking. So painters once looked asmadman. With breathtaking towards painters,"artist is madman" was once widespreadespecially in domestic. It is not well known that madman is synonymous withschizophrenia. Patients with schizophrenia will lose their life and work ability ultimately, who are usually characterized by manic, hitting people, destructing things and even losingself-control in the highest state, if symptoms of schizophrenia are not effectivelycontrolled. Serious depression is often accompanied by schizophrenia, but it is not thesame one. Many artists have been beset by depression, it can be found by the large amountof investigation analysis that depression not only leads to the painter psychologicalbehavior disorders but inspires artistic creation. But why is depression so partial to these artists? Is it because of artist’s specialidentity or other reasons? The article starts with this question. Then we will discuss wherepainters’ depression is mainly from, special influence of depression on painters and theirpainting creation, and different methods of treatment for depression with all the detailpossible. The first part of the article begins with review of artist whose individual lifeexperience is depressed to find out the root cause of depression. With analysis of lots ofdepression cases, the result indicates that the main reasons are mostly concentrated inheredity and lost experience of personal life as a trigger. The next part mainly focuses on positive and negative impact on painters’ life andcreation from depression. While causes of depression are not the same, the reaction of itssymptoms is also various in painters’ life and their state of creation.Given that we have already found reasons, it is clear that the last part is mainly tosolve the problem, which is certainly also the most difficult part. First of all, as a kind ofmental disease, depression is different from the physical trauma, which is unable to cureby the use of drug. Self-regulation and psychological counseling of patients are moreimportant and the situation becomes even more complex for this special group of painters.Taken together, depression usually befalls on painters unfortunately and plays a rolein their creations, which cut both ways but do more harm than good from a personal perspective. Although countless famous masterpieces give birth by the "collision" ofdepression and artist’s creative inspiration, few people pay attention to their heavy mentalburden and ineffable sorrow in the real life behind these masterpieces. In the spirit world,we follow the master to step forward, and never want to see masters who walk in the frontwith black and blue soul suffering from depression. They should be excellent, but theynever should have to pay a high price and even their precious lives therefore.
