Chinese traditional short cartoons generally refers to those animated worksproduced during the early1950s to early1990s, in the form of paper-cut, ink, shadowpuppets, puppetry, drama or in other artistic forms. Their contents are based on theliterary classics, myths, legends, folk tales, and fairy tales. Length of the animationpieces are ususally less than thirty minutes. Drawn from literary classics, combinedwith the reality of the cultural thoughts, the adaptation of animation can be done onthe contents of innovation results. Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory theoreticallyproved the inheritance and development of the adaptation process. Animation worksas a mass media, should not only adapt to the literary language of the content andideas of the classics, but also adapt to the psychological state of the audience whowant to combine entertainment with educational effects. It is worthwhile and of greatsignificance for cartoon producers to adapt the literary classics heritage by employingthe Chinese traditional art forms for the sake of edutainment in the new era. As anmass media, animation must contribute more to the popularity of traditional Chineseculture.Nine representative animation works have been selected for analysis byAdaptation Theory of Pragmatic. This dissertation expounds respectively contextualcorrelates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptabilityand salience of the adaptability processes. The first chapter describes the corpussource, the research purpose, research methods, significance and innovation. Thesecond chapter introduces the general research of Adaptation Theory, including theintroduction and its development in different areas. The third chapter describes therelated concepts of Adaptation Theory and Mass media, which is the basis of ourresearch. The forth chapter describes the selected corpus on classification, keeping theadaptation of the classic animation and literature for comparison, analyzing thecontent and extent of adaptation. The fifth chapter focuses on the use of AdaptationTheory Analysis for analysis and presentation. The sixth chapter is a conclusion based on the analysis above. The selected cartoons, regarding the content, are expandedin a basic framework in line with the originals, or replotted for the character designing,which are adapted from literary classics to conform with contemporary socioculturalvalues through animation media, which is an interpretation of the traditional culture inthe new era. Adaption is displayed in the context of language structure, is a dynamicprocess, and highlights the purpose and intent of the producers. Domestic cartoonsmanufactured before1990s were world-renowned, not only because of the animationin the form of continuous innovation, but also because of the inheritance of thetraditional arts and classics. Drawing nutrients from the ancient Chinese art andculture and maintaining the spirit of the times is the future of animation media topromote Chinese culture and thought. Language is the carrier of ideas; animation stillhas to act as a medium to ttransmit cultural values and scientific knowledge to thenext generation by means of language. However, this heritage must use newtechnologies and attitudes to the form and content of the animation for packaging,which is a necessary for the inheritance and development of our traditional languageand culture.
