Professor Wang Pijiang was expert in poetic theory as well as poetry writing. However, studies on his academic contribution to the contemporary Chinese poetry has been discriminated all the time. This thesis attempts to evaluate Professor Wang’s great achievements in Chinese traditional poetry by a careful study on his scattered works.The thesis is composed of3chapters. The preface part gives a brief presentation of the status and significance of this research work, explains the ideas and methods taken by the author, delineates the structure of the thesis, and highlights the problems involved. Chapter one—"The Overview on Wang Pijiang’s Chinese Traditional Poetry"—a collection of Professor Wang’s scattered works, categorizes them into four periods, compares the published poems with quoted ones and discusses the most popular style in his time. Chapter two—"Pursuing Huang Tingjian’s Model"—discusses the intrinsic and situational reasons for Professor Wang’s imitation of the Song poetry, searches for details about Chong Yang Gather and Posthumous Birthday Anniversaries for which Professor Wang created groups of special poems, trying to understand his attitude towards "the debates between Mr. Hu Xiansu and Mr. Hu Shi", especially the three features expressed in his poetry. Chapter three—"Expertizing the<Shui Jing Zhu>"—deals with Professor Wang’s academic achievements relating to the<Shui Jing Zhu> and examines his three poems which convey his opinions on version research of the<Shui Jing Zhu>, trying to show his special creative methods as well as his professional knowledge involved in poetry writing. The last part analyzes how Professor Wang’s poetic theory influences his poetry writing, and reviews his excellent performance in the contemporary poetry creation.
