Culture-loaded words refer to the words and phrases that are loaded with special cultural content, directly or indirectly reflecting the culture of a nationality. Culture-loaded words are a combination of the words’ conceptual meanings and cultural meanings. In cross-culture translation, the complete translation of the cultural information carried by the words in the source text involves the delivery of both conceptual meanings and cultural meanings, which is an intractable task for translators because different cultures seldom overlap each other. To deal with this situation, translators have to carry on a thorough analysis of the categories of culture-loaded words in cross-culture translation. When translated from the source text to the target text, culture-loaded words may work more prominently in four aspects:when the conceptual meanings and the cultural meanings in the source text are similar as in the target text; when the conceptual meanings in the source text are similar as in the target text yet the cultural meanings are different; when the conceptual meanings in the source text are different yet the cultural meanings are similar as in the target text; when the conceptual meanings cannot be found in the target culture. This thesis gives a comprehensive consideration of the elements affecting the translation of culture-loaded words and discusses the translation strategies of culture-loaded words based on the translating practice.
