Vargas Llosa’s works were deeply recognized and loved by readers all over the world, and these works not only helped him to win international literary awards for many times, but also brought him up to win the Nobel Prize for literature in2010. This is another affirmation for his works. From the late1970s, Vargas Llosa’s works began to be introduced to China, and have been widely praised and circulated. However, not only the research on Vargas Llosa is single and one-sided, but also the studies of the characters in Vargas Llosa’s works are much more less and lack authority. In order to do a complementary study about the characters in Llosa’s works, and also to further understand the cultural and psychological root of Llosa’s character images, this article selects "the floaters" from the many characters in Llosa’s novels, and explores the forming reasons and deep meanings. Besides the abstract and the conclusion, this paper will make the following exposition. The suffering social reality of Peru and the entire Latin America has its own unique characteristics. Through the description of political and economic environment, social cultural environment, religious culture environment and so on, the paper will reveal the dark social reality at that time, and the people’s difficult living conditions. The mysterious and unique Latin America is the big stage of Llosa’s novels. Because of the international identity, and also in order to express the universality of the dark reality, Llosa not only pay attention to his motherland Peru, but also focus on the other countries in Latin America and some countries in Europe, such as the Dominican Republic and France. All of these countries are full of exploitation and oppression, discrimination and violence. People straggle in the swamp of survival, poor and backward, ignorant and insensitive. On the basis of presenting the characters and classifying the images, the paper analyzes the specific characters of "the floaters" in details. The article will select "the floaters" from Vargas Llosa’s different novels, to demonstrate their insistence in the suffering social reality, and the no surprised failure."The floaters" belong to different times and countries, come from different classes, and have different occupations. During them, there are students, officers, artists and revolutionaries. No matter what the identities they have, when facing the problem, they all have their own reasons to insist on. But, at the same time, under the huge and inescapable pressure to survive, they make a concession, and become compromised and rotten. As a result, they finally be the failure in the suffering reality. Then, the paper discusses and expresses the formative reasons about "the floaters". It interprets from three aspects, such as the characters’themselves, outside forces and the influence of the author’s own experiences, to explore the domestication and poison to humanity that come from the dark social environment. In Llosa’s works, whether they are insensible and obedient people, or the brave who against to death, are losers. The insensible and obedient people are losers because they are satisfied with the status quo, and give up the resistance. And the brave failed because even though their death can not change the reality. Over the years, the history will repeat itself."The floaters" belong to the losers, but they are not just failures. Because there is a clear reflect on them, that the humanity how to be domesticated. Finally, the deep meaning of "the floaters" in this paper is carried on a summary. The progress of the society does not wipe out the dark, and each era has its own social evils. Mario Vargas Llosa has been exploring the path to save the people in distress, at the same time, he has always failed to find. Although failure is inevitable, but Llosa’s original intention is to alert people:In addition to a hoot blood, they must measure the reality correctly, and make a complete preparation, otherwise they can only end in failure.
