As the first African American female writer who has won the Nobel Prize forliterature, Toni Morrison has created many significant works. Among them, Sula isher second long novel, which tells the story of an African American girl called Sula. She boldly breaks the restrictions between man and woman, struggling for liberationof thought and self-discovery. Though she ends up with death, she sets a pioneeringexample for others who want to pursue self-independence. In conclusion, based onthe theories of deconstruction and the deconstructive subversion to traditional binaryoppositions in Morrison’s creating texts and contents, this thesis makes readers havea deeper understanding of Morrison and her literary creation as well as the charactersand plots in Sula.
