The story of "Undoing Oxen by Cook Ting"(庖丁解牛)is often heard and well-remembered, occupying a very important position in CHUANG-TZU. Only when the meaning of this story is better comprehended can CHUANG-TZU be understood further. How to translate, interpret and comprehend this story in the English-speaking world under the cross-cultural context? What are the differences among those translated texts? How to promote the translation and interpretation of CHUANG-TZU in the future under the multi-culture environment? I will try to answer all these questions in this paper.This dissertation focuses on the close reading and comparative analysis on the cases of the English translation and interpretation of the story of "Undoing Oxen by Cook Ting", based on the deep study and careful organization of the translated texts. The key words and core sentences are carefully sorted out and analyzed to find out the similarities and differences, inheritance and development and the advantages and disadvantages. This kind of analysis, deep and intensive, on this story from CHUANG-TZU provides valuable reference for the future study and translation of CHUANG-TZU’s philosophy.The first chapter includes the genesis, significance, scope and methodology of this paper, mainly introducing the methods, procedures and selections of translated texts of this thesis.The second chapter deeply and carefully demonstrates and analyzes three key words of the story from fifteen translated texts:“解”、“技” and“道” identifying the differences and similarities and valuating the "gain and loss".The third chapter mainly turns to the three core sentences:“官知止而神欲行”、“依乎天理,批大却,导大窾,因其固然”and“以无厚入有间,恢恢乎其于游刃必有余地矣”,analyzing the differences and similarities among the translated texts, In the meantime, how to translate function words and convey the poetic quality of this story in the translated texts are discussed. The fourth chapter concludes gains and losses on the translation and interpretation of this story, summarizes the main developments and characteristics of the translations and indicates its enlightenment for the translation and study of Chuang Tzu in the future.
