Contemporary art is in a diversified era, in this context, art creation has more possibility. The Combine of Surrealism and image give imaginative wings to artist.Image is pasted a "real" label from its birth, but along with the deeper understanding of image, people find it isn’t absolutely real as people imagine. The surreal image in contemporary art field, although its surface looks like shadowy and absurd, hides the possibility of expressing another truth. But this truth isn’t the superficial truth, it straight comes into the interior of spiritual world, to express a higher level of truth. The Surrealism image is the soul experience about the world. It is not only a new way of art expression, but also a revolution of human thinking.The contemporary surreal image art, has greatly enriched the image expression although relying on graphics software processing, but many subversive image works still rely on traditional manner to present. In the times of digital technology becoming a trend, some artists constantly explores in traditional image creation way. Roger Ballen perhaps is such an artist.With a unique expressing way, South African photographer Roger Ballen give a new interpretation of the possibility of surrealist image expression, his artistic creation, let the surrealism come back to the track of exploring the actual world, provides a good example for contemporary creation of image art.This paper attempts to analyze and interpret the surreal images of Roger Ballen, provide a reference for the contemporary image art creation.The first part of the article, mainly discusses the surrealism trend of contemporary image art creation. Through introducing the origin of surrealism and its ideological basis, the influence of surrealism painting on the image, as well as the analysis of contemporary surrealist image status, this paper discussed the present situation of surreal image.The second part of this paper, introducing Roger Ballen’s creation experience and the detailed interpretation of his series of works, this part is the important and difficult point.The third part of the article, through the analysis of the Ballen’s art characteristics, puts forward the idea of reconstructing the reality life.The fourth part focuses on the absurd expression to the real life, which hidden behind his works.
