The Professionalization Of Telephone Interpreting In China

With the deepening of globalization and expansion of international exchanges, there is an increasing demand for interpreting. As an emerging form of interpreting, telephone interpreting has won the favor of many clients and companies for its people-centerednes, convenience and cost-efficiency. For example, telephone interpreting has been applied in large-scale sporting events, conferences, healthcare and other areas. With the strong momentum of China’s economy, we can foresee the huge market potential of telephone interpreting in China. However, China’s telephone interpreting, in terms of both service and research, is still in its infancy. Therefore, we should attach great importance to the academic instruction in telephone interpreting, so that the quality of telephone interpreting can be guaranteed and its prosperous market can be maintained.By way of literature review, SWOT analysis and case analysis, this dissertation studies the professionalization of telephone interpreting, drawing on the data of Telephone Interpreting Service provided by Multilingual Call Center in26th World University Games. The author classifies the influencing elements into five categories, which include pre-task preparation, turn-taking, nonverbal information, language and culture barrier, visibility consciousness and equipment. Finally, the author puts forward some feasible suggestion for professionalization of telephone interpreting from the aspects of technical equipment, pre-task preparation and training, testing, assessment and certification of telephone interpreter.This paper aims to provide a new study direction for telephone interpreting and serve as a reference for future research in this field. Hopefully, with more researches conducted, the quality of telephone interpreting will be improved.
