Globalization of economic provides a promotion to the culture globalization. Inour increasing culture-exchange with western nations, studies on the English proverbsand also the culture which is reflected from these proverbs become more and moreimportant and necessary.Basing on the concept of metaphor in cognitive linguistic theory, this study usedescription, interpretation and contrastive analysis as study method, trying to give aproper description on linguistic phenomenon and make reasonable interpretations tothe phenomenon in the generating sources. This study also analyze the difference andsimilarities of metaphor in those proverbs describing women and figure out theorigins and reasons so as to deepen our understanding of concept of metaphor andgive a help to it.The conclusion is of this study is that: concept metaphors are frequently used inChinese and English proverbs about women. The metaphors used in these referredproverbs have many differences and similarities basing on Chinese and Englishculture. the using of metaphor is mainly influenced by cultures, livingcircumstances, religions and human customs generating from Chinese and Englishhistories, thus showing different language sources. Comparison of the proverbsabout women from China and English culture, we can find that negative attitudetoward woman is much heavier than the positive attitude toward woman. Theproverbs about woman fully express the prejudice and discrimination to the female. This study still has some limitations.firstly, the proverbs used in the study takesonly small part of the female–description proverbs in English and Chinese languages, which makes the study not so considerate and comprehensive. Secondly, the languagesources are mainly taken from proverb dictionaries and language database. Thelimitation of quotation maybe give this study some doubt in the study’s reliability. Ifin the future, more information was gathered and thorough database is built, the studywill continue.
