Wujing Wenzi《五经文字》is a book written by Zhang Can in776AD, in this book, Zhang Can examined the pronunciation, the form and the meaning of characters in the classics. In this thesis, we analyze2,257phonetic notations, including1,653Fanqie反切and604Zhiyin直音,and conclude the phonological structure, the phonetic nature, and the phonetic evolution of Wujing Wenzi. This thesis consists of six chapters, and the Chapter Two to Six are the main part.Chapter One is the introduction which includes the reason why we select this issue, the research status about it and a description of Wujing Wenzi. In this chapter, we also explain the style and editions of the book and describe the method we use in the research. In Chapter Two, we analyze the initial system of Wujing Wenzi. Compared with Qieyun, the labials in the Wujing Wenzi has developed into bilabials and labiodentals. What’s more, the initial "Si"俟has combined with "Chong"崇.A trend of devocalization in sonant can also be found.Chapter Three touches upon the following features of the rhyme system in Wujing Wenzi:1st, the first grade of "Dong"东has coalesced with "Dong"冬in the smooth syllables, but there are still some differences between them in the cheched syllables.2nd, the open series among "Zhi"支,"Zhi’’脂,"Zhi"之and "Wei"微have merged in the laryngeal initials.3rd, the rhyme "Guai"’夬and the open series of "Jia"佳have merged with "Jie’’皆,and the rhyme "Hui"灰has coalesced with the rhyme "Hai"'in the labials.4th, rhyme series among "Zhen "真,"Zhen"臻and "Xin"欣have coalesced.5th, rhyme series among "Shan"山and "Shan"删have merged.6th, the second grade of "Geng"庚has coalesced with "Geng"耕, and the rhyme series "Qing"’清has coalesced with "Qing"'in the closed syllables, but there are still some differences between them in the open syllables.7th, the rhyme "Tan"覃and "Tan"谈,"Xian"'and "Xian"衔have coalesced separately.Chapter Four mainly expounds on the tone system of Wujing Wenzi. Compared with Qieyun, the changing from voiced ascending to descending has discerned.Chapter Five offers the syllabary of homophones about Wujing Wenzi.Chapter Six is a conclusion which summarizes the phonetic nature of Wujing Wenzi. By analyzing the principles as well as the source of the phonetic notations, and comparing the mixed-up case of each rhyme in Wujing Wenzi with Guangyun, we draw a conclusion that the phonetic nature of Wujing Wenzi reflexes the standard language of the middle Tang唐dynasty.
