In general, the Russian idiom as a ready-made linguistic unit has three basic features:reproducibility, semantic integrity, and structural stability. Nevertheless, not all idioms stay unchangeable in the composition. Many idioms can have several different kinds of variant forms in the course of usage.The variation phenomenon of Russian idioms is the concrete manifestation of linguistic dynamic. As the Russian idiomatic develops, the variation phenomenon of-Russian idioms has become an important research subject in linguistic domain. Despite of various and different kinds of research methodologies and perspectives, certain vague understandings exist in many aspects of the variation phenomenon of Russian idioms. So far, few systematic research achievements have been made over the variation phenomenon of Russian idioms either in China or in Russia. Therefore we chose this topic to continue our study.This article chooses the variation phenomenon of Russian idioms as subject and tries to develop a systematic research about it by adopting methods of summarization, classification, description, interpretation and comparison, in order to explain the distinctive features of the variant of Russian idioms.The research of the variation phenomenon of Russian idioms has important theoretical and practical significance. By systematically analyzing the variation phenomenon of Russian idioms, we can not only improve our understanding about this special linguistic phenomenon, but also enrich Russian idiomatic theories. Therefore it has certain values to Russian idiomatic and Russian linguistic research. On the other hand, the achievements of this article can be extensively applied in teaching practice of Russian idioms, providing help for Chinese students to use Russian idioms proficiently.The initiative point of this article is as follows. First, it has made systematic analysis about the variation phenomenon of Russian idioms from different aspects and perspectives. Second, it has clarified the dialectical unification relation between the stability and variation of Russian idioms. Third, it raises a systematic classification of the variation of Russian idioms. Forth, it has concluded and summarized the distinctive features of the variation of Russian idioms.This article includes the introduction, the main part of three chapters, the conclusion and references.The first chapter is to clarify the concept of the variation of Russian idioms. This chapter is based on the basic theories of Russian idioms and the analysis of the definition of the variant of Russian idioms given by linguistic schools. Then it discusses the relations between the stability and variation of the idioms.The second chapter is a classified study of the variation phenomenon of Russian idioms. This chapter simply retraces the classifications of the variant of Russian idioms in Russian linguistic schools. Then this article classifies the variation phenomenon of Russian idioms into seven types:phonetic type, morphology type, word-building type, syntactic type, scalar type, vocabulary type and compound type. Each type has been analyzed with certain examples. Based on this classification, this article discusses the manifestation of the variant in idiom entries.The third chapter explains the distinguishing characteristics of the variant of Russian idioms. This chapter starts with clarifying the complicated relations among the variation phenomenon, the transformation of idioms, the synonymy, and the paradigm of Russian idioms. Then it compares the variation of Russian idioms to those three latter phenomenons, analyzing the distinctive features of the variant of Russian idioms.In the conclusion part, we summarize this article and reach a conclusion. Also it further provides an outlook of the research subject of the variation of Russian idioms.
