Around 2000, a bunch of French directors shot a series of films embodying excessive sex and violence. Among the directors, Catherine Breillat,Bruno Dumont,Gaspar Noe and Francois Ozon are most representative. The trend of "crossing the border to reveal the border" was named as New French Extremity, which spread from France to the whole Europe and turned into an important phenomenon. This paper firstly summarizes the study across the world, locating the trend according to its origin and development as well as its social background, thus naming it as "Salo-Bataille School". Then, this paper analyzes the subjects of New French Extremity, pointing out that they are marginalized and problematized "anti-subjects". There is also a deep tension between marginalized and problematized people. An analysis of marginalized subjects from the perspective of sex, sexual orientation, race and class is made in the meantime. After the discussion of the background, an analysis of sex and violence in New French Extremity is made, using the analysis of the deep structure of murder in the bath as an introduction. Regarding the sex and violence as a practice of crossing the border, this paper summarizes them as " sex as a cry out" and "violence as a penetration" separately. By comparing the specific scenes in different films horizontally and vertically, this paper analyzes what kind of purpose the content and formality of crossing border wanted to achieve and how they used, overturned, revealed and maximized the routines in commercial films and B-movies.This paper tries to grab the main characters of New French Extremity by combing the subjects in the text and using sex and violence as the core of aesthetical analysis, to help viewers in China to understand the trend of current European art films and promote the study of current French films in China. |
