In 1998,the famous article’The Extended Mind’, had been published on the magazine Analysis by Andy Clark and David Chamers. In this article they had picke d up a controversial view which is called extended mind.In this view, the external p hys-ical environment and social environment can also be a cognitive subject and me ntal elements, and cognition is not confined to the brain, mind is not confined to the s kull and skin, but can be extended to the world. The common sense and traditional concept of the mind is influenced by dualism of Descartes, in this view, mind and body are independent of each other, no matter that mind is a kind of entity or property of the brain, mind stays in the body. The extension of the concept about the mind is seem as a challenge to common sens e, it inherits the external theory, and thought that mind is not like entity ormonad, and dispersion between in the subject and object. Based on this point,to extendthe con cept of the mind with strong revolutionary, brings new enlightenment for the researc h and development of the philosophy of mind. This paper attempts to trace o-ut thro ugh the development of extended cognitivism,so as to achieve a comprehensive anal ysis of the extended mind-a new and unique concept of the mind. This article will explore the theme from three parts:The first part will describes the outline history of the development of the mind theorys, the first detailed analysis have great influence on the development of substan ce dualism of Descartes, the argument of externalism and Internalism, and from the o utside in the doctrine of extended cognition and extended mind,as the extended min d concept of unique ideological basis of the analysis of the positive externalism. The second part focuses on the origins and development of the extended cogni tivism. The concept of extend mind is based on the extended cognitivism hypothesi-s and influenced by the cognitive revolution. Once the philosophy of mind had beent herefore suffering by the behaviourism and then had reborn with the developmen t of cognitivism. The computationalism is the main idea in the early days, and the physical symbolism and connectionism are the most representative ideas in compu tationalism, but this two views are unable to overcome the difficulties in the computati onalism. So the second cognitivism revolution had happened, and the representative o-f’4E’research program had born. The extended cognitivism would be the most sign ificant one in’4E’.The third part is talk about how the mind may be extended.Andy Clark and Dav-id Chamers argue for extended cognitivism hypothesis by coupling structure and the equivalence principle, and argue for extended mind hypothesis through the thoughte xperiment ’Otto’s notebook’.This view is criticized by intracranial doctrine, so And y Clark and David Chamers also responded to the critcism to maintain their view of extended mind.
