Chinese martial tradition has a long history and the Chivalrous men are important groups who are described by the ancient scholars and whose unique charm is worshiped by people.The appearance of Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties chivalrous novels in the literary history marks that the Chinese martial arts novels enter the first creative climax, and a large number of knight images with different styles come into the people’s vision, and those mysterious and elusive swordsmen are of special attention.This thesis mainly makes a research on swordsman images from five aspects of the novels of Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties,and tries to analyze and demonstrate the images comprehensively to demonstrate their unique artistic charm and the history values of the novels.The first part is an introduction which mainly introduces and defines briefly the swordsman as well as the significance of research on research status and image analysis of the swordsman.The second part is the main body of the thesis, which is composed of five chapters. The first chapter studies swordsman’s entering the stage, mainly from the way of swordsman’s entering(including the direct entering of the swordman, the relevant man’s entering firstly and the introduction of the background history firstly), swordsman’s appearance(male man looks strange, beautiful young woman)and swordman’s identity(Taoist monks and nuns, slaves, prisoners, assassins, lower civilians) to analyze.The second chapter studies the Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties novels swordsman image which is divided into two parts. Part one is analized from the perspective of swordman’s purpose for man, and subdivides the swordman’s image, which includes heavy graciousness, avenger, chivalrous man,hermit and the man of steal treasures.Another part studies the swordsman character, which is divided into the evil, alone, haughty uninhibited, ruthless type.The third chapter studies the swordman’s skill in wushu in novels of Tang and Five Dynasties, and the skill is mainly presented from the views of the use of weapons, the power of magic and fight scenes, among which the weapons include swords, daggers, rods, bows and arrows, slingshots, short whip and refining cone,and the magic skills include fly over the walls, dodge, invisibility, divine power, brain hiding things and medication of water bodies, etc.and the fight scenes include head on, sneak stealth, theft to warn, etc. These martial arts are inseperatable from the development and spread of religion and Wushu.The fourth chapter studies the end-result and the bearing values of the swordsman in the novels of Tang and Five Dynasties. There are two kinds of the end-results of the swordsman, one is lay down one’s life for justice, die for martyr; another is floated to retire after winning merit. The values they bearing are mainly discusses the swordsman’s treatment of family, marriage,legal and property concept.The fifth chapter studies the history meaning of swordsman image in novels of Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties, which is explored from two aspects, one is the inheritance of martial arts and magic arts of the later novels.The Song and Yuan Dynasties Novels inherit the magic arts, and continue to gods and spirits, created a spell, symbols, chilly wind, invisibility, etc.Novels of the Ming and Qing Dynasties inherit the fighting skills, and develop spells to the supernatural realm. Another is that the image type is followed by later novels. The Song and Yuan Dynasties basically follow the Tang and Five Dynasties which include mainly the punishing corruption crime and show off the fencing.During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, in addition to follow Tang and Five Dynasties in destroying evil and promoting good,punishing the common people, the novels also pay more attention to inherent character and discipline of the swordsman.The third part is the summary of the thesis. Through the studies of novels of Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties, we can see although most swordsman’s stories are short, and the plot is relatively simple and single, these short stories have created a number of different images of chivalrous swordsmen, which exerts far-reaching impact on future martial arts novels.
