On Practice Of Visual Public Speaking In College English Teaching

Among four English language skills of “listening, speaking, reading and writing”, oral English is a relatively weak part of many college students. Under the influence of the traditional teaching idea and teaching mode, college students’ English learning enthusiasm and initiative can not obtain adequate cultivation, their English learning is inefficient, and hence their speaking skill of English language fails to get proper training and improvement. In view of this, through combing and exploring the literature of related studies and by the support of relevant theories of second language acquisition and task-based language teaching, this study applied visual public speaking to the teaching of college oral English in order to improve the students’ English learning efficiency and their ability to speak English.For this study, 83 students were selected from an institute of technology in Fujian as objects of the teaching experiment, and they were divided into the experimental group and control group and went through 16 weeks of experiment teaching. Testing of oral English and comprehensive English were conducted respectively before and after the teaching experiment, and the data obtained in the study were analyzed by using of statistical software SPSS 19.0. The study results showed that the oral English performance of experimental group were better than that of the control group, and comprehensive English test scores of experimental group were higher than those of the control group, which indicated that this English teaching method of visual public speaking had a positive role in promoting the college students’ English speaking skill and their comprehensive English. At the same time, the questionnaire survey result of this research also showed that the students in the experimental group approved and liked the English teaching method of visual public speaking.
