| In the process of translation, context deeply influences the understanding and expressing of language, but contextualization, to some extends, can help translators correctly understand the source text, and without changing the context of situation, make some changes to conform to the target linguistic context and context of culture. By contextualization, it will successfully solve the problems causing by different contexts of Chinese and English. Therefore, this thesis analyzes political news translation from the perspective of context and respectively from three aspects of political news title, news lead and news body, and summarizes the feasible and efficient translation strategies of contextualization, so as to transmit the information of political news report correctly and reach the goal of global communication. On the basis of former studies, it classifies context into linguistic context, context of situation and context of culture. In the process of political news translation, context of situation deals with the actual situation of the political news event, including when, where, who, what, why and how, which also reflect the basic six elements of a news report. Thus, context of situation justifies the content of political news translation. However, there are some obvious differences between Chinese and English contexts of culture. On the other hand, the form of linguistic expressions is deeply affected by cultures, i.e. linguistic context is affected by context of culture. Therefore, the form of political news translation is restricted by both context of culture as well as linguistic context. In the practice of political news translation, rewriting, as a special strategy of contextualization in translation, is a very common phenomenon for realizing a better communicating effect.Through analyzing political news reports on Chinese President Xi Jinping in People’s Daily from June to December of 2014 and their English translations on People’s Daily Online, there exist some similarities and differences between the two. By analyzing both Chinese and English contexts and figuring out the reasons for the similarities and differences between the two, this thesis finds out that(1) Chinese titles are structurally more complicated than English ones, so the translation of political news title needs to contextualize by outlining the main points and simplifying the structure;(2) Chinese leads are usually longer than English ones, so the translation of political news lead needs to contextualize by keeping the fundamental elements and reconstructing them into a general and concise statement; and(3) Chinese political news bodies are having longer paragraphs providing more specific information than English translations do, so the translation of political news body needs to contextualize by integrating the concrete and important information and rewriting for meeting the interests of foreign readers. What’s more, political news directly reflect the nation’s political stance, Chinese translators should be faithful to the actual political facts, and uphold steadily to the Chinese political stance at all times and correctly spread Chinese culture in translation for global communication. Therefore, doing researches on political news translation from the perspective of contextualization has certain realistic and guiding significance. |
