This is a project report on the translation of the first four chapters from Love Lies, whose author is Adele Parks. The first four chapters introduce the characteristics of the heroine Fern, who is independent both in work and life and the relationship between Fern and the hero Adam. The four chapters reflect that women are in pursuit of independence and self-worth.The book Love Lies is a literature works. When do literature translation, translators have paid attention to the preservation of foreign features. Thus, Chinese readers can not be able to figure out the intention of the author of the source language and generate the same feeling as those native speakers since Chinese culture is different from those of western countries. Functionalism is under the impression that translation is a purposeful activity. It gives top priority to the target text and the targeted culture. Besides, the target audience is a decisive factor for translators to determine the main purpose of a translation. From the perspective of functionalism, the translator has the freedom to choose a suitable translating method to realize the function of the targeted text. There are many idioms and slangs in the source language, which bear the culture features. Concerning the language characters of the source language and the functions of cross-culture communication, I choose Functionalism as the guiding theory. During the translation process, I adopt free translation and amplification and also pay attention to the correct understanding of original text. The project report is made up of four parts. The first part gives an introduction to the background of the project, which consists of the source, the significance and the structure of the project. The second part introduces the information of the source, such as the author, the version of the book and the features of the book. Part three is about the practice of the project. In this part, problems that the translator comes across in the translation, why functionalism is adopted as well as how to apply functionalism into practice are discussed. The last part concerns the experience, the lessons learned in the translation, and unsolved questions of the translation.Through this translation practice, I am deeply convinced that translation can not just be done words for words. When does translation, one should take the functions and aims of the original text into consideration by using proper translation methods so that targeted readers can have the same feeling as those native readers. As literature translation focuses on the language, I need to pay more attention to the learning of English and Chinese.
