It has been suggested that the emotional effect of music is the most important reason why people engage in musical activities. In western countries, the music and emotion study has gain plenty of outcomes. However, according to the differences between the east and the west, that apply western research findings directly to eastern background may not be a good choice. In domestic background, there is still no systematic emotional study about Chinese folk music. So the current study makes an attempt on this subject to make a reasonable emotional model of Chinese folk music. The "emotion" referred to the current study is perceived emotion.In study 1, a total of 95 participants rated the affect terms in the list respectively to reduce terms. In the interest of ensuring inclusiveness of our initial selections, affect terms that come up fairly frequently in literature on music and emotion and be suitable for Chinese folk music have been added to this list. After the elimination of synonyms, a final list of affect terms would be used in Study 2.In study 2,167 participants rated the affect terms from study 1, which resulted in the list of affect terms that in relation to Chinese folk music. After exploratory factor analyses, an emotional scale was obtained.In study 3,101 participants rated the affect terms from study 2 on the basis of Chinese folk music excerpts. The result of confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the 7-factorial model provided a mediocre fit. The architecture of the final model includes 7 factors.The current emotional model not only analyses the emotion construct of Chinese folk music and makes a comparison between Chinese and western music, but also fills in the blank fields and provides a selection criterion for the emotional music repository.
