Implicit Theories Of Hope In Colleage Students

The conceptualization of hope with cultural differences is important issue. In Study 1, According to the Spreading Activation Model, the word "Hope" was presented as a stimulus to which 210 subjects were asked to respond with at least 15 words that came to mind. The 56 hope-related phrases with frequency above 4.9% were collected as units of analysis. Based on the interrelation, the complete-linkage cluster and multi-dimension scaling analysis were made. Results indicated that: (1)There were three facets of the representation of hope concept:Future-oriented and goal-oriented; beauty in life; positive action and strength. (2)The concepts yielded 2 bipolar dimensions:time-space, sence-sensibility; In Study 2, based on the 56 hope-related phrases and reevaluation of 45 undergraduates major in psychology,20 positive/negative words related hope were seleted. Research used IAT of hope, Dispositional Hope Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale and Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale,80 college students received these implicit and explicit tests. The results show that:(1) IAT effects was significant,subjects tended to associate self with positive words related hope. (2) There was no significant correlation between implicit hope and explicit hope. (3) There was no significant correlation beween implicit hope and subjective well-being.
