Clarifying Ethical Relationships-An Inquiry Into The Thought Of Zhang Qia’s Chun Qiu Ji Zhu

As an important disciple of Chu Hsi, Zhang Qia is a renowned neo-confucianism,who is known as a specialist in the Spring and Autumn Annals.And the Chun qiu ji zhu(Collected Annotations for Spring and Autumn Annals) is the representative work of Zhang qia.In this work, he mainly discusses the monarch-subject relationship^ father-son relationship and husband-wife relationship.He argues that if these relationships are dysfunctional, the political situation will be unsettled. So in order to avoid the unrest,he believes that these relationships should be handled in good ways.And in the book of Chun qiu ji zhu, Zhang qia talks about how to deal with these relationships in good ways.In terms of monarch-subject relationship,he believes that the monarch should have a clear criteria of punishments and curb the power of the minister.In addition,the monarch should keep the secrets between the minister.On the other hand,as a minister,he should remonstrate with the monarch when the monarch makes a mistake. And if the monarch or the country is under the condition of great danger, he should sacrifice his life. When the monarch is killed by someone,he also should take revenge on the enemy.And the minister should serves his monarch with good faith.Zhang Qia also claims that the the rebels and traitors should be punished.In terms of father-son relationship,the father should distinguish trueborn eldest son from the others.When the father is ill,the son should properly take care of his father.And if the father is killed by someone,the son has the duty to revenge.In terms of husband-wife relationship,Zhang Qia thinks that the beginning of the marriage should be right. In the family, the husband should distinguish the different status of the wife and concubine.And the attention should be paid to the distinction between male and female. Virtuous wife should be rewarded in order to show the right behavior.
