This thesis is based on translating Exodus:How Migration is Changing Our World under the guidance of the German functionalist skopos theory. The book examines migration in economic, political, and cultural perspective, summarizing what consequences of open-door and close-door policy might bring to the relevant countries and analyzing the causes of these consequences. Since Exodus:How Migration is Changing Our World intends to provide readers with political, economic and cultural information concerning migration, it falls into the category of informative texts, one of the three types of texts defined by Katharina Reiss. The translation of this text, consequently, should pay special attention to precisely transmitting the information it intends to express. And thus, the German functionalist skopos theory offers a helpful theoretical support to translate it. In the light of this theory, the author of this thesis makes a translation brief, namely, the purposes of this translating practice, and analyses the specific techniques needed in the process of the translation on the level of words and sentences. The functionalist skopos theory provides this translational practice a guidance in that it, in comparison with the equivalent theory, helps the translator in finding a balance between precisely transmitting the information in the original text and catering to the needs of the targeted reader.
