Bei Dao is skilled at rendering abundant and uncertain thoughts with the intuition of image. He has his own unique image groups in his poetry, including the dark, the sun, the fog, the winter, the sky, the red, the ladder, the shadow and so on. Among which the mirror is the most distinct one and it is the identification of Bei Dao’s poetry. Not only mirror, images like eyes, water surface, shadow, glass, echo, dream, sear and so on can be used to present the reflection and the co-existence of virtual world and reality. Mirror can also be used to express the flow and the spatialization of time, other images like painting, calendar and memory have the similar functional meaning. The images above are named mirror images in this paper. Mirror image is a bridge for poets to feel the life and the world, showing their thoughts toward the history and ego. Both Chinese and foreign literature, the mirror has been studied many times. It is always mentioned in ancient Chinese literature, modern and contemporary female poems, but there is more in Bei Dao’s poem. Therefore, through the mirror image, this paper attempts to analyze Bei Dao’s cognition towards history and ego in different time to reach a more comprehensive understanding of them. The introduction of this paper introduces Bei Dao and his poetry, as well as the explanation and the classification of mirror image. The body has three chapters, elaborating the three functional meanings of the mirror. Chapter one is the confirm by contrast:the resistance under high pressure. The author expounds this chapter through history strategies and ego-identification. This part analyzes the reflection through various mirrors under high pressure at the beginning of writing. He confirms his value, strengthens his ego-identity by self-reflection confirmation. He went positive and negative resistance to return the ideal and humanity. Chapter two is to examine through the mirror. The open reflection, which is based on historical conspiracy and ego-examination, is obtained after the Cultural Revolution in a more tolerant political environment in 1980s. The poet understood the hypocrisy of the history, accused of the distortions and dissimilation of the human nature, disclosed the relationship between ego and historical conspiracy, and endorsed himself in constant reflection and negation. Chapter three is the reconstruction in mirror:the spiritual breakthrough of the unfamiliar environment and culture. The author explains this part by two aspects: beyond the time and ego-reconstruct. His lonely existence overseas results in the outsider of his country’s history, and leads to the anxiety of his ego-identification. In the world made up by the mirror image, the poet reconstruct his ego and realized the ego-identification which sustained his survival in the real world and made the breakthrough. The conclusion part comes the summary of this article and points out the shortcomings.
