The Classic of Mountains and Seas is a mysterious book of Chinese civilization. It records about 40 tribes, five hundred and fifty mountains, three hundred waterways, more than one hundred historical figures, more than four hundred mythical creatures and lots of myths.The Classic of Mountains and Seas consists of language and pictures, which open an unprecedented start of narrative tradition of language and picture.The Classic of Mountains and Seas shows us the thinking mode of our ancestors and the world in their eyes and acquaint us with ancient gods, animals, plants, mythical figures and tribes.However, the evolution of the pictures in the Classic of Mountains and Seas is rather complex, as the ancient pictures disappeared long time ago and part of the pictures drawn by the following painters have been missing. In addition, it is difficult to distinguish between the personal creation and the imitation.The pictures have an important significance for the research, because the Classic of Mountains and Seas consists of language and pictures, even the pictures have a longer history than the language.Secondly, in order to obtain the complete meaning, comparing the language with the picture is essential.Finally, as a graphical and visual way of expression, the research of the pictures can provide us with a comprehensive perspective.This paper focuses on the historical research to explain and discuss some of the basic issues, such as the evolution of the language and pictures,the analysis and comparison of the recorded pictures and the pictures which were handed down, the changes and characteristics of relationship between language and picture, the relationship between language and picture of the myths, etc.This paper is mainly divided into four parts.The first chapter analyzes the relationship between language and picture of the Classic of Mountains and Seas in the history. Part one describes the recorded pictures, mainly the pictures of the Classic of Mountains and Seas before the Ming Dynasty, in order to outline the timeline. Part two describes the relationship between language and picture of the Ming Dynasty. Part three describes the relationship between language and picture of the Qing Dynasty.The second chapter explores the evolution of the relationship between language and picture of the motif in the Classic of Mountains and Seas, such as the Fuxi nvwa myth, Xiwangmu myth, Xingtian myth, Kuafu myth, Jingwei myth, etc.The third chapter explores the characteristic and position of the relationship between language and picture of the Classic of Mountains and Seas. It is an important part of the history of the relationship between language and picture from The pre-qin. It has an irreplaceable positon because of its original thinking mode, non-mainstream literature mode, folk mode and a large number of myths.The conclusion part explores the changes and innovation of the relationship between language and picture of the Classic of Mountains and Seas in the contemporary era. I use some instances to explore the practical application and its influence on contemporary literature and art.
