The study on conceptual metaphor has undergone a very long period of time with abundant accomplishment. A majority of researches conducted in conceptual metaphor are on sports news, or economic news, or political speeches. Under this circumstance, this research fries to analyze the FIFA world cup reports in The Economist to see how the conceptual metaphor is used in sport reports in the economic journals. Each type of the conceptual metaphor is identified, counted and proportioned. The reason and feature of the specific type of conceptual metaphor are also shown. All the efforts are done in an attempt to help the readers who take The Economist as learning material better understand those reports and properly apply conceptual metaphor in writing. All the texts in The Economist are sourced in its official website by the searching engine. By typing into the keyword "2014 world cup" and searching all the reports from June 6th to July 13th,42 reports are finally retrieved. Each sentence of the text is analyzed, sorted, categorized, proportioned, and then the features of each kind of conceptual metaphor are presented. The findings of the study reveal that ontological metaphor takes up the highest proportion. Then here comes the structural metaphor. The orientational metaphor makes up the minimum proportion. At the end of the research, the 2 main features of the conceptual metaphor are discussed, that is the feature of systematicity and the feature of coherence. This paper is trying to facilitate the learning of those readers of The Economist by analyzing the application of conceptual metaphor in its sports report.
