Balthus (Balthazar Klossowski Derola,1908~2001) was an outstanding figurative painting master of the 20th century. He started with the study of works by classical masters, and later in his creations he combined perceptions deriving from his personal life experience with rational pictorial expression.Based on my specific experience of copying Balthus’s work and analysis of his theoretical sources, this paper investigates the plastic, rules followed in the use of color and the extremely’rational’control of Balthus’s paintings through an analysis and discussion of his artistic language. It also provides an understanding about the formation of Balthus’s artistic identity and Weltanschauung by touching upon aspects such as his artistic style and conceptions. This study attempts to point out those objects which he recreated and carefully depicted-objects that existed but which disappeared because of people neglect and inadvertence. Balthus proves that he is not searching a self-understanding of the world, but that he is striving to show the world and to make manifest the real existence behind the visible realities of the world. My objective in rigorously copying Balthus’s work and in the writing of this paper is to extract the valuable creative parts of Balthus art, so as to improve my artistic creativity and expand the framework of my own knowledge.
