China has a long history of cards which originated in late Tang Dynasty. Cards can be divided into “Word card” and “Flower card”. There are several types of cards and different ways to play them throughout the country. For example, "Liu’s flower card", "Chuan card", "15 Hu" and etc. In the region of Hunan, Hubei and Chongqing, there is a trendy card game among the Tujia minority which some named it “Shang Da Ren” card, and some named it “96” card. In the city of Enshi, this folk game is generally named “Shao Hu”.Enshi “Shao Hu” is a traditional folk card game with a long history and broad scope. It is responsible for an ethnology researcher to study the origins, changes and developments about its cultural connotation of this traditional entertainment.This study is based on Shao Hu as the research object. The main methodology of this research is the fieldwork of Ethnography. The research mainly focuses on Baiyangping Villiage of Enshi City, describing and analyzing the fundamental states,culture, and social function of Shao Hu. This article mainly uses the opinions of the functional theory, analyzing the needs and culture effect of Shao Hu in Tujia minority.The exploration of Shao Hu’ origin can reveal the condition of the Tujia community at that time. The comparison of Shao Hu in modern society and traditional society can give an insight into the changes of Shao Hu and some modern opinions about it.This article is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction which explains the research subject, research methods, and review the relevant literature. The secondpart gives a background of the card history, the name of “Shao Hu”, the appearance of the card, as well as the game rules. The third part introduces the Tujia culture and the“Han” factor in Chinese culture relate to the “Shao Hu” card. The fourth part explains the social functions of “Shao Hu” from three aspects including individuals, groups and society. The last part of this article concludes the overall study and gives recommendation.
