Edmund Spenser (1552-1599.1.13) is one of the famous poets in Elizabethan Time, called "the prince in poets", being in the status after Shakespeare and Milton in English literary history, the same time deeply influenced by humanistic thought, so he is also regarded as a humanist. He pioneered Spenserian stanza and Spenser type of fourteen lines of verse to the development of English poetry literature,which has a great influence. Spenser’s works reflect his feelings about a classical culture, humanistic characteristics, religious attitude and his political ideal thought. Through the interpretation of Spenser’s works, we can be more comprehensive to understand profoundly humanistic characteristics of Spenser’s thought, and this contributes to our understanding of the English Renaissance.The purpose of this paper is to further on the basis of predecessors’research combining the era background of the Renaissance and Spenser’s works to explore multifaceted characteristics of humanism in Spenser’s thought, trying to show readers more of a humanist Spencer. This is also the academic innovation of this article.In this paper, there are five chapters. The first chapter briefly describes Spenser’s life experience and humanism education background and the age combined with the cultural background of the society at that time and through Spenser’s life experiences we can visualize his character, understand the original creation of the works. From the second chapter to the fourth chapter, I separately analyze the paper in three aspects:the new Platonism, the religious idea of harmony, idealized political attitude, then show multifaceted interpretation of Spenser’s characteristics of humanism thought. The fifth chapter expounds the historical position of Spenser and far-reaching influence, and reflection, summary of the Renaissance, and its influence on the Spenser. This paper analyzes its expression in the works of polyhedral characteristics of humanistic thought, helping us rationally understand Spenser and humanism, a deeper understanding of the English Renaissance.
