Abstract/Summary:
This paper is a translation report. The translation source text is The Diary of a Nobody, created by George Grossmith, and Weedon Grossmith. The Diary of a Nobody is famous for its English humor in English world. As we known, it is necessary to restore source language’s context for the difference of English and Chinese culture. The primary purpose of this thesis is to discuss how to build cultural context to make a thorough understanding of English humor in The Diary of a Nobody for Chinese reader.According to Malinowski, context is consist of context of situation and context of culture. Specific context of situation derives from cultural context. The primary purpose of this translating of The Diary of a Nobody is, on one side, to express the information of original work, on the other side, to bridge the gap between Chinese readers and the authors through building cultural context. During this translation, I run into a disturbing problem---- choice of cultural context retaining or conversation of translation, which equals to choice of source language-centered culture or target language-centered culture. By some approaches (mainly are squarely facing culture differences, maximized culture re-creation and careful conversation of cultural images) this thesis is to make a further understanding of English humor in The Diary of a Nobody for Chinese readers.
