In recent years,Asian American literary gradually comes to centre and continues being popular in literary circle. More and more domestic and overseas scholars have attached great intention to it and developed their researches. Under this background, the translator chose the work of the representative Asian American writer Karen TEi Yamashita,Tropic of Orange,to translate,for the purpose of satisfying those readers and scholars who want to know about the life and situation of Asian immigrants. This is a realistic novel, which discribes the life after Asians immigrated and compliments the good qualities of Asian Americans. The introduction of this novel contributes to the culture communication between the east and the west, providing reference materials for scholars.The writer spent two months on the first draft, and turned it in to the supervisor for modification. Following the context and functional equivalence theory, the translator employed various translation strategies to ensure the smooth progress of translation, and also met some difficulties and challenges.This translation report focuses on the textual material from Tropic of Orange, an excellent work from Asian American Author Karen TEi Yamashita. The translator chooses the first two chapters to translate, and summerizes the experience, problems and strategies chosen during the practical progress. There are five parts in this report. Part One is the description of the translation task,the introduction of the author and her work,and the strategies. Part Two is the preparation of Pre-translation, including the analysis of the source text and the preparation of the translation theories. Part Three is the core part, analyzing the problems and difficulties met during the progress by the method of case analysis. Following the context and functional equivalence theory, the translator adopted various translation strategies, in order to reflect original content accurately and show its spirit truthfully. This part analyzed the translation examples from three levels: the level of context, the level of word and the level of sentence which both under the background of functional equivalence, summerizing the problems and strategies chosen during the translation. Part Four is the translation review. And the last part is the gains and limitations about the translation, providing some suggestions for future translation.Through this translation practice, the translator realized an excellent translation work is not just retelling a story without one-word left. Translation is second-time creation. We must guarantee a full accurate comprehending to original work, practice writing and refine our language, and pursuits for resemblance.
