This thesis is a practice report based on a consecutive interpreting task of the International Symposium on Innovation and Sustainability of Structures in Civil Engineering. This was an academic seminar sponsored by Harbin Institute of Technology. This seminar attracts many civil engineering experts and scholars from all over the world. It provides professional content, abundant technical terms. Many scholars have conducted theoretical studies on interpretation. Nevertheless, few of them have combined the theory with specific practical cases in a certain field. The author, first, analyzes typical problems in her practice in terms of knowledge of the language, environment and psychology. Then, she presents the problem-solving strategies, such as intensification of professional terms, employment of context analysis, and cultivation of cross-cultural awareness. Finally, the author elaborates on the importance of the accumulation of knowledge and enhancement of language proficiency. The author presents this report in the hope that it will be of use to other interpreters, especially those who are interested in science and technology. |
