| In the political discourse, politicians intend to construct the ideology of their own and make efforts to propagate their political standpoints and win supports from the public by language, the powerful instrument. Eventually, they can achieve their political purposes. According to the author’s point of view, the previous studies of political discourse can be roughly classified into four categorizations:(1)The studies based on theory of CDA(Critical Discourse Analysis) put forward by Flower, Hodge, and Kress in 1970.(2) The research of Interpersonal Function of political discourses in the framework of three Meta-Functions put forward by Halliday.(3)Based on the metaphor theory of Cognitive Linguistics, the analysis of human’s cognitive mechanism in the political discourse.(4) The research on stylistic texts and linguistic features of political discourses. To sum up, the previous research of political discourse, the researchers just analyzed the linguistic features and the relationship between the speaker and the audience. The previous studies did not reveal the underlying ideology behind the language under the certain historical and social backgrounds and the politician’s language working mechanism under the influence of ideology under the certain historical and social backgrounds. How politicians construct their ideologies and ideology invasions to achieve their political purposes. These problems remained unsolved.Based on the previous studies on political discourse, from the perspective of cognitive sociolinguistics, the author tried to construct Ideology-Perspective and Prominence Model(Ideology-Perspective and Prominence Model, short for IPP model) to analyze the Winston﹒Churchill’s Speech on Hitler’s Invasion of U.S.S.R delivered in 1941 with the quantative and quantitative methods. Under the certain historical and social backgrounds, the author systematically researched the each level of Churchill’s speech in order to remedy the defects of previous studies on political discourse. The author constructed IPP model from the three steps: first of all, under the certain historical and social backgrounds, in order to defend political interests and achieve the political purposes, how politicians construct ideology of their political groups. Then, politicians would lead the audience’s attentions to what certain perspectives, what help the perspectives can provide to state political standpoints and attitudes by delivering their speeches. Lastly, how the politicians used special semantic expressions, syntactic structures and certain rhetorical devices to make their political positions and standpoints more prominent and achieve their political purposes more easily. This paper consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction part, including the research background, rationale, data collection and organization of the thesis. In chapter two, Literature review, the author summarized the previous studies on political discourses and the shortcomings of previous studies. Chapter three illustrates the theoretical foundation, IPP model, including the construction way and working mechanism of IPP model. The chapter four is the main part of the paper and analysis how IPP model is used to analysis the political context. Chapter five concludes the major findings of the thesis, points out the limitations and comes up with some suggestions for the future studies. The above research, from the perspective of Cognitive sociolinguistic, IPP model blends the construction of ideology and the principles of perspective and prominence to analysis closed corpus, which would be a powerful instrument to interpret political discourse. In the era of discourse hegemony, revealing the underlying relationship between the language expressions and ideology, which can not only help us to analyze ideology invasion behind the language but also help foreign language learners to construct penetrating political ideology and the reasonable attitudes toward international political affairs. |
