Tu An’s Collection of Shakespeare’s Sonnets is the first Chinese version covering all Shakespeare’s sonnets, this version had been re-translated and republished for 5 times in the period from the foundation of PRC to the Cultural Revolution. Scholars invariably focused on the significance and strategies of Tu An’s translation and overlooked the fact that in Tu An’s time such translation itself was a miracle, let alone the improvements and republications of his versions. They regarded Tu An’s translating as a mere language transferring phenomenon. In the first part, the author presents the manipulative factors in literary translation, and much importance is attached to the functions of professionals within the literary system. Then, the thesis displays the historical uniqueness of Tu An’s translation time: dominant ideology exerted unrivaled influence upon translating activities; dominant poetics was highly politicized; literary system was rigidly centralized under power and government audit mechanism on ideology determined the legality and fate of translation. By systematic studies on substantial first hand information, the thesis proposes the 3 functions of the professionals behind the publication, improvements and republications of Tu An’s versions. This thesis stands for it that Tu An’s translation activity is by no means a subjective deed; it could not be separated from the manipulation of professionals, and the success of his translation is the manifestation of the professionals’ literary identities oppressed by society. This thesis, in light of the “professionals” of the manipulation theory, set the studies on Tu An’s translation in the social and historical context. This thesis explains the deep-rooted reasons for the qualification for the publication, improvements and republications of Tu An’s versions albeit with the press of time. This thesis could provide new materials for translation studies in the period from the foundation of PRC to the Cultural Revolution.
