| Boasting a long standing artistic and cultural heritage, the classic Chinese gardenrepresents the aesthetic ideal of classical oriental arts. Chinese Gardens attach muchimportance to artistic conception.“Painting composition and poetical glamour†is thesoul of the Chinese garden. From the perspective of the aesthetic features of artisticconception, this paper systematically explores the artistic conception transferencestrategies in the translation of Chinese Gardens.As an important text of the classical Chinese architecture, Chinese Gardensintroduces the famous Chinese gardens to readers with detailed and exquisitedescriptions. Therefore, it is of considerable significance to translate this book to thepeoples of the whole world. It is a fairly trick field to explore the issue of artisticconception transference with the major difficulty lying in the complexity of artisticconception’s connotations. How to reproduce the artistic conception beauty hasbecome the demanding task in the process of translating. Starting from three aestheticfeatures (the combination of staticness and dynamicness, the fusion of the emotionwith the scene, the beauty of vacancy) of artistic conception, this paper mainlyexplores the artistic conception transference strategies. The comparative results ofChinese Gardens and its English translation version indicate that traditionaltranslation methods such as literal translation, conversion, addition, and inversion canapply to the transference of artistic conception. Meanwhile, this paper holds the ideathat fuzzy translation and compensative translation are effective methods to reproducethe original artistic conception. Finally, the author has the following major findings:being faithful to the original is an effective approach to transfer the artistic conception;the translator plays a subjective role in the process of successful transference; thereaders’ aesthetic beliefs and values have an influence on their experience of artisticconception beauty.This thesis is comprised of five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction, inwhich the author narrates the purposes and significance of the research in this chapter.In chapter two, the author makes a detailed introduction to artistic conception,including the origin and development, definition and connotations, components aswell. Chapter three studies the artistic conception in the original Chinese Gardensfrom three aspects: the fusion of the emotion with the scene, the combination ofdynamicness and staticness, and the beauty of vacancy. In accordance with chapter three, chapter four deals with transference strategies of artistic conception in thetranslation of Chinese Gardens. Chapter five is the conclusion, summarizing themajor findings, pointing out the limitations and proposing suggestions for the futurestudy. |
