This paper aims to study how cross-cultural teaching influence student’s oralcommunicative competence during oral English learning, and explore the correlationbetween cross-cultural teaching and oral communicative competence. Moreover, itaims to explain that students have a great improvement in their speaking competenceafter receiving the cross-cultural education. Studying different cultures ofEnglish-speaking countries helps to improve students’ oral communicativecompetence.Cross-cultural teaching has been attracting more and more attention in the fieldof foreign language learning. Cross-cultural teaching is becoming an issue of greatconcern in Chinese educational reform. This study, based on the review of literatureand previous researches on cross-cultural teaching home and abroad, aims to explorethe correlations between cross-cultural teaching and students’ oral communicativecompetence. The subjects were80non-English major students from two Englishclasses in Grade2012of Yunnan Institute of Technology and Information. There was no significant difference for the students’ English level, learningenvironment and cultural background. The researcher used questionnaire and oralEnglish test to measure the students’ oral communicative competence, adopted thepre-test and post-test to assess the changes of the oral communicative competenceafter receiving cross-cultural learning. The statistical results show that there is a positive correlation betweencross-cultural teaching and students’ oral communicative competence. Students withhigher interest in learning cross-culture are more likely to have better oralcommunicative competence. The research shows clearly that there is a positivecorrelation between cross-cultural teaching and students’ oral communicativecompetence for students with better oral English. That means, the more studentsknow cross-culture, the better students will have oral communicative competence. However, for students with poor oral English, there isn’t any significant correlation between cross-cultural teaching and oral communication competence, since they lacklearning cross-cultural knowledge.Pedagogical implications, limitations of the study and area for future researchare also discussed.
