C-E Translation Of International Business Contracts From The Perspective Of Logical Thinking

International business contracts, also called foreign economic contracts orinternational commercial contracts, refer to the written agreements defining civilrights and obligations which are made and entered into by and between parties fromdifferent countries, each of which shall strictly fulfill and perform the duties andobligations stipulated in the agreements. Concerned with the comprehensiveknowledge in such disciplines as law, finance, international economics and trade,international business contract translation requires rather high competence of thetranslators.With respect to international business contracts translation, a great many scholarshave conducted research from such perspectives as Skopos theory, functionalstylistics, functional equivalence, and register theory, etc. Yet these theories are shortof universality and comprehensiveness. And most of the studies based on them focuson E-C translation rather than C-E translation, leading to a deficiency both insystematic theory and practicability of the C-E translation of IBC.This thesis, on the basis of the previous studies, and supported by the LogicTranslation Theory by Yan Desheng, attempts to apply the three basic laws of logicalthinking in sorting and analyzing the real clauses and terms in IBC collected by theauthor, and thereby to find more systematic and pragmatic translation strategies andmethods for C-E translation of international business contracts.This thesis including introduction and conclusion is divided into six chapters.Chapter One, the introductory part, describes the research orientation, rationale,objectives and research methodology of this project. Chapter Two comprehensivelyreviews previous studies on IBC translation. Chapter Three introduces the definition,classification and features of international business contracts. Meanwhile it discussesthe significance of the C-E translation of IBC and briefly reviews its translationcriteria. Chapter Four expounds the theoretical foundation of the whole research,covering logic, the three basic laws and the forms of logical thinking and theindication thereon that translation is a process of logical thinking. Moreover, it pointsout the functions of logical thinking in C-E translation. Chapter Five investigates thespecific application of the basic laws of logical thinking in the C-E translation of IBC,and the translation strategies thereof. Chapter Six concludes the whole research andstates its implications and limitations. Suggestions for further research are given in themeanwhile. This research demonstrates the functions of the three basic laws of logical thinking tothe C-E translation of IBC with specific samples from real business contracts. It issincerely hoped that the results of this thesis to a certain extent would enrich andimprove the Logic Translation Theory, and also promote the development of businessEnglish education and research, and furthermore be extended to other ESP fields.
