On The Modernity Reflection Of Chinese Contemporary Science Fiction

Chinese contemporary science fiction is flourishing. This paper conductsa study on science fiction in the perspective of its theme and content. Sciencefiction originates from the modern society, with its core cognition rootedin the scientific technology, which is constantly developed by the acceleratedmodernity. Therefore, science fiction implicates the characteristics ofmodernity. After entering China, modernity has been tainted with the Chinesecharacteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to take both the design featuresof modernity and the unique development of Chinese modernity intoconsideration while studying Chinese science fiction. Based on the Giddens’theory of modernity, this paper proceeds from several main dimensions of theconsequences of modernity to expound the reflection brought by science fictionon modernity. The author conducts specific textural analysis from threeaspects. The first is instrumental reason inflation and human alienation.These two problems are quite salient among the consequences of modernity.Science fiction uses an imaginative method to create an inhuman social societywhich is full of groom, dread, apprehension and annoyance, or uses fables todescribe an alienated future society to reflect the issue of alienation inthe modern society. So science fiction works use various methods to reflecton and criticize the issue of human alienation. The second is the environmentaldestruction and ecological crisis. These are two serious issues among theconsequences of modernity, which have a bearing on humans’ existence statusand crisis and the doomsday. Science fiction expresses and explores a lot onthis aspect. Some directly describes the severe environment on the earth afterthe ecological destruction or the coming of doomsdays to warn people to protectthe earth, while others adopts a unique perspective to explore the relationshipbetween human and earth, human and nature. The third is the moral decline andvalue degradation. These two problems are the most salient in China. The lackof faith has resulted in moral decline and utilitarianism-oriented value hasled to a society pursuing power and profit. The science fiction writers havedeeply realized the problem of utilitarianism, so they criticize it in theirworks and appeal to the rebuilding of traditional values, expressing theimportance of love, dream, fantasy and transcendental values. According to the trend of the contemporary Chinese science fiction mainly, we found that thedeficiency of the Chinese fiction creation, such as political subject matterfew with the core of science fiction, etc. Therefore, this paper conducts apreliminary exploration of the reflection brought by science fiction onmodernity to gain an understanding of the development road of Chinese sciencefiction to guide the cause of Chinese science fiction to make some progressin some way.
